As you may or may not know, I recently contributed an article to HIDDEN HORROR, a compendium of essays on 101 different horror films that don’t often get the same recognition as the films one would see on a typical “50 greatest” list. What began as a labor of love, compiled and edited by Chicago-based actor and horror guru Aaron “Dr. AC” Christensen, soon became the little book that could.
We found ourselves with loads of positive reviews, a solid position on Amazon’s Movie Reference and Guide Book ranking, and the all power of a real grassroots, word of mouth promotional campaign. And eventually, we were gracing the pages of HorrorHound and Rue Morgue Magazines (full disclosure: a few of the book’s authors are writers for these rags, as well as Fangoria and the dearly departed FEARnet), climbing up as high as #5 on that Amazon list, and landing a coveted Rondo Award nomination.
For those not in the loop, the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards are given out each year in a wide variety of categories, from Film and TV Presentation to Fan Event and Favorite Horror Host. The awards are named for Rondo Hatton, a prolific actor whose distinct facial features (a result of acromegaly) made him a mainstay in several B-grade horror films in the 30s and 40s. The physical awards also resemble Hatton, in the form of a small bust of the actor as “The Creeper” from 1946’s House of Horrors, perfect for display on a desk.
It came as a thrill and (to some) a shock that HIDDEN HORROR was nominated for a Rondo, and the campaigning began. Last night, the word of mouth and the positive reviews and all the hard work paid off into a win, as Best Book of 2013. This is something like winning an Oscar in the horror world. As much love as was poured into the creation of the book is coming back in spades, and I could not be more thrilled and awe-struck by how well this project has done. I’m honored to be part of it, and I hope that this leads to more projects and writing for everyone involved. On behalf of the HIDDEN HORROR gang, thank you, thank you, thank you for all the support. We are truly grateful.
